The Life of a Software Professional - Thoughts

A little under a year ago, I got placed in Tata Consultancy Services, India’s largest IT Company. After a rather long wait, this November we were asked to be a part of the Globally 150,000 strong workforce. It’s been 3 full weeks of working so far, but those of you looking to hear lavish praises, be warned, it isn’t all rosy as its made out to be. The work is good, but something that hasn’t satisfied my needs of being tech geek, atleast not so far.
The first couple of days, we were introduced to the TATA family, and at the end of the sessions, I was definitely feeling proud of the fact that I was a part of the TATA family. It’s too early in the game to say how the road ahead will be, but the chances of it being truly exciting are fairly remote. And that to me isn’t a problem of TCS, but a problem of the Indian IT Enterprise. Finding obscure versions of Internet Explorer, restrictions on installation of softwares are a common thing, a problem to few, but an unavoidable activity for the companies I suppose.
But either ways, work so far has its amazing moments. Some of the sessions that we have at TCS Initial Learning Program are truly amazing. In particular the Life Skills sessions. There are about 60 of us from Nitte, in a batch of about 280 students. Somehow for some reason, chosen *randomly* apparently I’m the HR SPOC of my batch M69. Being a HR SPOC brings extra responsibilities to the table, some which I enjoy, some I don’t. Apparently so, the responsibilities of being the SPOC are having an effect on my sub conscious as well, and one night Kenneth heard me telling “Please sign the attendance sheets” while I was fast asleep. Talk about work engagement and what that can do.
But apart from the fact, of being the SPOC, the work is fun at times and a chance to interact with so many people is a definite plus! I still find myself walking around the premises a lot, just as I did back in Nitte. In some ways it reminds of the work and running around we did during fests.
The standout sessions so far are Vikas’s. There’s something about him that you will absolutely adore. He’s visually challenged, and a environment that is full of computers, keyboards and all electronic gadgets, he manages to find his way around with amazing ease, something that most of us can only dream of. Thus far he’s the best faculty that we have at the ILP. He’s a language trainer, might sound boring, but his sessions are simply awesome and hilarious most of the times.
The team activities, debates, role plays are all fun. The other Life Skills sessions are fun too, but the faculty that we have for Life Skills are simply amazing. So far, its only the Life Skills sessions I look forward to, than the technical sessions.
Back in the room that me, Kenneth, Raison and Rathan stay, life is fun. With the #shitraisonsays most of the time, we are always laughing. Washing our clothes, cleaning the room are chores that none of us want to do, but end up doing, after endless deliberations and acts of laziness. We go to office at about 13.00 Hrs everyday, but the last week saw us leaving even later. By the time we are back after work and dinner its almost 23.00 Hrs everyday. I almost immediately crash into bed, while the rest stay up for a while.
The three weeks past, saw us complete two Milestones of our Project, Debates, Role Plays, about 4-5 team activities, Java Crash Course, and tons of document submissions are formalities. Life is busy, but not the busy life back in Nitte. More busier, a little more boring, but so far so good.
More on another day. Cheers! Have an awesome day :)
P.S : Apologies that I haven’t updated most people with my new contact details. You will hear from me soon.
